Scarborough Hospital has launched a project allowing heart failure patients to monitor their vital signs at home using telehealth. The telehealth system connects to the patient\'s home telephone line and readings are sent to a central monitoring centre, where abnormalities can be identified and acted upon quickly. Tim Houghton, cardiologist at Scarborough and North East Yorkshire Healthcare NHS Trust and project lead, said: "This is an exciting project for the trust which we hope will bring huge benefits for heart failure patients living in the area. Telehealth will give us the opportunity to monitor patients from a distance, so our specialist team can intervene when necessary to prevent deterioration in symptoms. This means patients with heart failure are hopefully less likely to be admitted to hospital and can remain in the comfort of their own home."
